Economists, Public Policy, and the Shaping of the American Economy
ECON256 SP

An exploration of the role of economists as advisers to American presidents from the days of Roosevelt's New Deal through "Reaganomics" of the 1980s. Extensive use will be made of materials drawn from the Presidential Archives.

MAJOR READINGS

Major reliance will be placed on collections
of official memoranda generated by economists as policy
makers and on articles from professional journals.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Final examination and research paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Each student will be expected to make a brief oral presentation to initiate seminar discussion on an assigned topic on two occasions during the course of the term.
