This interdisciplinary seminar is concerned with the historical evolution of large-scale forms of economic and political organization and the development of corresponding collectivist ideologies in the United States and Germany during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among the topics considered are the philosophical and practical aspects of markets and central planning, technocracy and social engineering, total war and its impact on economic and political institutions, the tension between the individual and the collective in complex societies and the "Keynesian Revolution."
