Money in the Economy

This course provides an introduction to financial markets,
theory and policy. The theory and practice of money,
banking, the financial system, portfolio management,
interest rates and monetary control will be developed. The
course will emphasize the differences between commodity and
credit money. It will attempt to shed light on the
fundamental question: how does nominal monetary change
affect real variables in an economy?

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Problem sets (25 percent),
short papers (25 percent), research paper (25 percent),
final examination (25 percent).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
