The preservation of competitive rivalry in the United States economy. Examples of governmental intervention through the antitrust statutes (Sherman, Clayton, F.T.C., Robinson-Patman and Cellar-Kefauver acts) on cartels, price-fixing conspiracies, predation, mergers, monopolies, unfair acts and practices, discrimination, and tie-in sales. Some attention given to deregulation of industries such as airlines and transport in the past 15 years.

MAJOR READINGS

Primarily selected court opinions since
1890.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Written final exam as scheduled by the Registrar. Assignments: Cases assigned daily to be discussed in class. Occasional short papers. Considerable importance to class discussion.
