A one-semester introduction to microeconomic analysis and
its application to issues of public policy. The course
focuses on how resources are allocated in a market economy
and how the globalization of the marketplace affects public
policy. Topics include analysis of U.S. welfare programs,
the importance of productivity to economic growth, the
domestic and international competitiveness of companies, the
determents of invidual wealth, the role of labor policy, and
global environmental protection.
MAJOR READINGS
Introductory textbook to be assigned;
Additional readings from various sources, e.g., the
ECONOMIST, on policy topics.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two progress examinations
during the term, a final examination scheduled by the
Registrar, and almost weekly homework exercises, e.g.,
problem sets, short issue papers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Prerequisite: A
working knowledge of elementary high school algebra is
established by passing the mathematics placement examination
given to all freshmen, by completing MATH107 or a higher
number course offered by the Wesleyan Mathematics
Department, or by obtaining advance placement in Calculus.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
