The course will study the fully developed system of ancient rhetoric, as represented in the standard Roman treatises. Subjects discussed will include: Roman theory and practice of rhetoric; rhetoric and education; the relationships between rhetoric and philosophy and between rhetoric and poetry; the history of attitudes to rhetoric, including the modern reappropriation of some of its categories.
