This course will survey the cultural and artistic development of the city of Rome from its origins down to the reign of Constantine. Particular attention will be paid to the periods of Etruscan domination, Hellenization, and imperial expansion and their effects on the physical appearance of the city and neighboring towns such as Praeneste, Tivoli and Ostia. Topics will include aspects of daily life, politics, religion and the great artistic and architectural achievements documented by the material remains of Roman civilization.
