By close reading of some paired works, we will examine how each author has chosen to construct his story (e.g., use of evidence, presentation of themes, depiction of character, authorial intervention, etc.). The selections will probably include: Ladurie, MONTAILLOU; Berger, PIG EARTH; Spence, EMPEROR OF CHINA; Huang, A YEAR OF NO SIGNIFICANCE.
