This course will be a half-credit survey of Greek and Roman
antiquity whose aim is to expose students to the variety of
interests and interpretive strategies that exist in
Classical Studies. It will be organized around four major
units -- Homer's ILIAD or ODYSSEY; selected Greek tragedies;
Ovid's METAMORPHOSES or Vergil's AENEID; and Petronius's
SATYRICON or Apuleius' GOLDEN ASS. The exact selection will
vary from year to year, depending on the faculty available.
At each weekly session, one member of the Classics faculty
will lead a discussion of the text on the basis of his or
her own specialty. Thus the approaches will include
literary analysis, social and cultural history, and art and
archaeology. One of our faculty will serve as "overseer"
for the semester, attending all the classes, directing the
assignments, and evaluating the students' papers and class
participation.
