In A Manner of Speaking: An Introduction to Classical Rhetoric
CCIV120 FA
Next Offered in 9899 FA
In the course we will study the development of classical
rhetoric and the fully-evolved system as familiar to Cicero
and his contemporaries. We will analyze some speeches of
Cicero that exemplify the three major styles of ancient
oratory and look at sample themes and declamations from the
Greco-Roman world. In the last portion of the course we
will discuss Plato's criticisms of rhetoric and the
rehabilitation of rhetoric in recent critical theory.
Students will have the opportunity to practice what they
have learned in oral and written compositions.
