Events with which students are familiar, either through personal experience or through the media will be used to present the principle concepts of how the immune system works, when it fails and when it is modified by the environment of physicians. The response to a splinter, childhood immunizations, hives, hay fever, arthritis, a blood transfusion, AIDS, "the boy in the bubble" and Mickey Mantle's liver transplant will be starting points for explorations of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the specific, systemic and recall nature of the mammalian immune system. Text book materials will be supplemented with primary research papers and information on the Internet. Students will work in groups to formulate and answer questions on mechanisms based on these resources.
