Starting with monuments of the Kushan period (1st-2nd c.
C.E.), this course traces the architectural evolution of the
Indian temple through to its culmination in the South Indian
temple cities of the Nayak period (17th c.). The point of
departure is morphological and stylistic analysis of the
buildings themselves, which will then fuel discussions on
architectural symbolism, the relationship between temple
architecture and Hindu ritual, and the social and political
functions of temples.
