Studies in Asian Art: Seminar on Japanese Woodblock Prints
ARHA380 SP
Crosslistings: EAST380
Next Offered in 9899 SP
A multi-faceted approach to the appreciation of Japanese
woodblock prints, in which the prints will be studied both
as works of art and as expressions of the Japanese urban
culture of the 17th through 19th centuries. The latter aim
is to be accomplished, in part, through readings in the
socio-cultural history of the period and an examination of
contemporary literature that treats the life of the merchant
class. The art historical aspects of the course will be
approached through other assigned readings and class
discussion. The course will also make use of the prints in
the collection of the Davison Art Center.
