The arts of West and Central African societies are an
integral part of community life. Art expresses ethical
concepts and religious and philosophical ideals that may
not be readily expressed in words. The visual arts offer
important insight into indigenous belief systems. At the
same time, appreciation of local religion sheds light on
the function and meaning of art forms. We will take a case
study approach and focus on several West African societies.
