Beginning with the Shinto shrine at Ise and ending with the Zen garden of the Ryoan-ji, the course will cover a series of important Shinto and Buddhist sanctuaries, analyzing each as an integrated architectural-artistic statement of a particular set of religious teachings. The class will explore the formative influence of religious doctrine upon art in these specific settings.
