Introductory survey of India's art traditions from the Indus Valley civilization to the coming of Islam. The primary emphasis is on architecture and sculpture, although mural painting and minor art forms such as coins and terracottas are also covered. An attempt is made to place the art in its cultural context through consideration of the traditional conception of "art", the artist and his social milieu and the relationship between art and religion.
