This historical survey begins with an introducation to the
arts of Africa. It continues with a focus on Caribbean
festival arts. These festivals include Trinidadian Carnival
and the Jonkonnu Festivals of Jamaica and of coastal North
Carolina. We also study Brooklyn Caribbean Day, using

archeological evidence of the persistence of African
