This course will explore French art and architecture of the
17th century, beginning with the cessation of the Religious
Wars and the advent of Bourbon rule under Henry IV, and
culminating with the consolidation of monarchic power under
Louis XIV. The primary focus of the course will be art
commissioned by the crown, including architecture, painting,
sculpture, garden design, decorative arts, and the
performing arts. Special attention will be paid to the
development of Paris as a world capital, as well as to the
complicated building history of the Chateau of Versailles
under the Sun King, Louis XIV. Artistic developments in
France will be considered within the larger context of
European art of the Baroque period. Emphasis will be placed
on the historical, political, and social significance of
royal patronage.
