Dutch Art in the Age of Rembrandt

This course will consider the art of Rembrandt, Hals,
Vermeeer, Ruisdael and other masters active during the Dutch
"Golden Age." While exploring the unique nature of Dutch
painting this course will probe ties to other European
traditions, especially in Flanders and Italy. Attention
will be given to issues of art theory as well as to current
controversies over interpretation.
MAJOR READINGS
Reading will consist of contemporary
documents and other primary literature (in English
translation) as well as scholarly articles. Although the
course has no textbook, the following volumes are
recommended for purchase: Seymour Slive, DUTCH PAINTING
1600-1800, and Mariet Westermann, A WORLDLY ART: THE DUTCH
REPUBLIC, 1585-1718.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Written assignments will
include a visual analysis of original etchings by Rembrandt
and/or other Dutch artists (mostly drawn from the
collections of the Davison Print Collection), and a short
(6pp.) research paper. There will be a short quiz early in
the semester, a midterm and a final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Regular attendance
and reading of all assigned materials. Participation in
class discussions. Unless preregistered students attend the
first class meeting or communicate directly with the
instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped
from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a
completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
