The history of our field will be viewed as a recurrent
struggle with two major problems: the need to find a
unifying idea and an object proper to anthropology, which
has led to the emergence of the concept of culture and the
need to formulate a theoretical vision of human society
capable of dealing with such dilemmas as similarity and
difference and continuity and change. The course will
emphasize the persistence of past solutions in current
anthropology.
MAJOR READINGS
Rousseau, Vico, Herder, Marx, Comte, Tylor,
Spencer, Boas, Durkheim, Mauss, Freud, Radcliffe-Brown,
Malinowski, Levi-Strauss, Mead, Benedict
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Mid-term and final take-home
essay projects.

Each week
designated students will facilitate class discussions.
