Cinema, Culture, and Politics in India ANTH288 FA

This course will explore the links between cinema, political culture, and society in India. Concentrating on Bengal and taking a broadly historical and symbolic interpretive approach to Indian culture, we shall explore Indian and comparative esthetics; economics of film production, regional, alternative, and popular cinemas.

among them the works of Satyajitv Ray, Mrinal Sen, Buddhadev
Dasgupta, Shyam Benegal, Keetan Mehta, Adoor Gopalakrishnam,
Aravindan, Govind Nihalani.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Short papers, one in-class test and a longer take home final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

One social science and/or one cinema course LAB FEE OF $40.00 Tuesday evening screenings of above films. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
