Cinema and National Cultures in Central Europe

Concentrating on Hungary with a comparative study of Poland,
Czech Republic and Yugoslavia, the course will examine the
links between political culture, society and cinema. It
will consider how the films of particular moments and places
in contemporary eastern European societies and history
defined and considered politics and national cultures in
cinematic terms.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings will be drawn from anthropology,
film studies, literature and history. About 16 feature
films of the 1960s and 1970s will be screened--among them
the works of Jancso, Meszaros, Szabo, Wajda, Forman,
and Makavejev.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Short papers, mid-term
in-class test, take-home final project.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
One social science
course and/or one film studies course. LAB FEE: $40.00 There
will be film screenings every Tuesday at approx. 7:30 p.m.
in the CFA.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class
meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to
the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
