This course will examine the ways anthropologists have approached the U.S. as an area for study. We will read ethnographies in which the issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality are elucidated by the "logical knowledge" gathered through fieldwork and are linked to questions of identity, community, social life, and power. This course will also address the logistical and ethical implications of carrying out fieldwork in the U.S.
