This course examines the characteristics of traditional Chinese poetry with emphasis on the development of poetic forms, styles, themes and expressions. The study will focus on the most important genre in Chinese poetic literature, SHIH poetry. In order to have a better understanding of Chinese poetry, we will also give attention to the biography of each major poet and the historical background of each poem. No knowledge of Chinese is required.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular attendance and reading of all class materials. Participation in class discussion. Three short papers. One mid-term examination and a take- home final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

No knowledge of Chinese is required, but some background in literature or in East Asian Studies is desirable.
