Through cinematic classics of Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Korea and Vietnam (ranging from 1930s to 1990s), we
will survey how Asian cultural and historical heritages are
mediated via filmic representations of modern Asian
societies. We will examine how Asian film artists make
adaptive use of such western cinematic techniques as the
male gaze, the 180 degree rule, the point-of-view shots, the
long-take, etc. to capture typical Asian mood, social
customs and personal psychology in modern social life. As
the course proceeds, we will pay increasing attention to
issues of general cultural interest conveyed by means of
visual techniques; we will relate to the kind of role played
by visuality in literary and cultural transformation and the
politics of cross-cultural transfer of intellectual and
technological know-how.
