This course provides an introduction to classical Japanese
literature and aesthetics. Readings will include THE TALE
OF GENJI, selected Noh plays, poetry, writings on Buddhism
and aesthetics, and a bit of modern fiction that reflects
classical standards. All readings will be in English, and
no prior knowledge of Japanese language is required. If
you've never studied premodern Japan before, you should read
a good survey, such as John Hall's JAPAN FROM PREHISTORY TO
MODERN TIMES or Sir George Sansom's JAPAN, A SHORT CULTURAL
HISTORY, as the course progresses.
MAJOR READINGS
Murasaki Shikibu, THE TALE OF GENJI
(Seidensticker translation)
