African American Theater Workshop

This course is designed in three parts:
To study the major Afro-American playwrights from 1925 to
present for structure (theme, plot, character, action) as
well as the social and political environment of the play in
its time. Special attention will be paid to August Wilson,
George Wolfe and other emerging playwrights.
An intensive workshop in the art of acting through practical
studio investigation.
A six-week period of rehearsal culminating in a full
production of one of the plays studied.

BLACK THEATER ANTHOLOGY edited by Woody King
Will include but not limited to: PIANO LESSON, JOE TURNER
COMES & GOES, FENCES by August Wilson. COLORED MUSEUM,
SPUNK by George Wolfe. Nine new one acts for the Black
Theater edited by Woody King.
BLACK THEATER U.S.A.; 45 black plays by black Americans
1847-1974, edited by James B. Hatch, published by Free
Press
