Bali, a small island in Indonesia, has a unique culture,
which is marked by a profusion of interesting, strange and
beautiful types of theater and dance. The shadow puppet
theater, masked dance drama and a dozen other genres will be
examined with respect to their central place in Balinese
life. Some aspects of the effects of Balinese performance
on Western artists and of the West on the Balinese artists
will be considered.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm and final
examinations, one 10-20 page term paper or project of
comparable effort and difficulty. Certain obligatory film
and video viewings will be scheduled outside the regular
class time.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
While this course
has no prerequisites, it is recommended only for students
with some basic acquaintance with world geography and the
history of the modern world. The course may be of interest
to students of anthropology, linguistics, colonial history,
ethnomusicology or studio art, as well as to theater and
dance majors.
