This course is intended for first and second year students who plan to be heavily involved in the theater program. It is aimed to provide a common frame of reference in the Western "canon" of great and frequently revived plays, from the ancient Greeks to the present. Approximately 40 plays will be read outside class; scenes from many of them will be read aloud in class time, and a certain amount of time will be devoted to lecture about and discussion of the works considered. This will not be a history of the theater. There will be frequent quizzes and one final exam.

MAJOR READINGS

Forty plays.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three short tests, plus final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course is primarily intended for frosh and transfers intending to do intermediate and advanced work in theater.
