An examination of the phenomen of Spanish social poetry against the background of the Spanish Civil War and subsequent Francoist regime. Through a chronological overview, we will attempt to arrive at a more precise definition of the term "social" by questioning this category and addressing the following issues: individuality vs. collectivity; criticism, commitment, and realism; forms and effects of censorship. Analysis and discussion of how these issues emerge and converge in representative texts will allow us to debate their relative contribution to the perception of social poetry as social, and provide us with a deeper conceptual understanding of this literary movement. Poets to be studied include Alonso, Hierro, Celaya, Otero, Gonzalez, and Rodriguez, among others.
