Cervantes' work continually raises the problems of separating fantasy from reality, fiction from fact, art from life, interpretation from perception, reality from the language used to describe it. Can they in fact be separated? And what does Don Quijote signify in the cultural history of Spain? We read and discuss major works by Cervantes with these and similar questions in mind, but without losing sight of the great master of comedy.

MAJOR READINGS

DON QUIXOTE, complete; selected EXPEMPLARY
NOVELS; one or two farces for the stage. Supplementary
readings in cultural studies, criticism, sociology,
philosophy are supplied.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three short papers, final paper or project on topic of student's choice. Oral presentations are revised and written up as short papers.
