SPAN233

Spanish Theater
SPAN233 SP

Next Offered in 9899 SP

A close reading of plays from all periods of Spanish literature. Various critical approaches will be employed for analyzing the relationship between each work and: (1) the genre of dramatic literature; (2) the work's socio-historical context. The syllabus is organized to emphasize three specific modes of reading theater. (1) In an intrinsic reading we will study the extent to which stage representation is encoded in the written text; (2) an extrinsic reading will focus on dramatic literature as a reflection of society; and (3) through an overview of plays from different periods (the historical perspective) we will analyze how the genre has evolved in Spain in time.
