Classical Spanish Literature

Close study of representative texts up to 1700 will
serve as the basis for a historical survey of the formation
and variety of Spanish literary culture from earliest times.
Oral traditions are taken into account, as are Spain's
relations with other cultures, European and Semitic. Stress
on reports, participation in discussion.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings include selections from the
medieval epic of El Cid and other narratives: LAZARILLO
DE TORMES, poems and plays by the great authors of the
"Siglo de Oro", a story by Cervantes.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Three short papers; self
scheduled final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Required of majors,
but non majors welcome. SPAN224 is intended for students who
have completed SPAN221 with the grade of B or better.
Students who have not done so should consult with the
professor before preregistrating.
Readings, class discussion, and written work in Spanish
only.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
