This course will examine the emergence of modern corporate organizations and public bureaucracies and the various theories advanced to explain these phenomena. The course will assess the significance of the "managerial revolution" by evaluating the changing objectives and practices of organizational managers. Class readings and discussions will focus on the various ways that the social sciences have been employed to interpret, justify, or criticize the roles played by private and public organizations and their leaders.
