This seminar explores a number of basic sociological ideas through a description and analysis of the professions in modern society. Issues regarding definitions of professions, patterns of recruitment and training, professional-client relationships, codes of ethics, public images, trained incapacity, and so forth are examined with reference to selected occupational roles (e.g. lawyers, physicians, scientists, clergy, nurses, social workers). The strategy is to use the practical problems associated with professional work to illuminate broader cultural and structural problems.
