SOC 303
Representation and the Production of Meaning
SOC 303 SP
Crosslistings: WMST303, SISP303
Next Offered in 9899 SP
How do we move from empirical data about women to a feminist
analysis? How do we understand and use various feminist
theories? How do we factor both power and resistance into
our analyses? To address these questions we will analyze
transcripts of doctor-patient and nurse practitioner-patient
communication (discourse) and newspaper texts which discuss
the Baby M case, the Hill/Thomas hearings, the Kennedy and
Tyson rape trials and media discussions about homosexual men
and lesbian women in the military. Moving from this
empirical base, we will read and discuss ways to analyze our
materials.
