Readings of three sets of French and Russian novels of the 19th century will be directed at identifying distinctly national versions of Romantic themes and their stylistic treatments. Our findings will suggest some possible functions of prose fiction in two very different societies and heighten our awareness of our own literary tradition. Readings will be from Pushkin and Benjamin Constant; Lermontov and Chateaubriand; Dostoevsky and Balzac; Tolstoy and Flaubert.
