Theory and research on human motivation, with particular emphasis on the achievement, power and affiliation-intimacy motives. Topics will include the study of motivation in society, government, and history; motives in the mass media, the origins of motives; and major theories of motivation (Freud, learning theory, cognitive theory, humanistic theory).

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Hour exam and take-home final. Term paper on some aspect of human motivation (research projects using existing data on motives of political leaders, or motives in history, are especially encouraged).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

While this course covers one major part of personality theory and research, it is also designed to be of interest to those studying the relationships between psychology and the other social sciences.
