An introductory noncalculus course in some fundamental principles of physics, with particular emphasis on electromagnetism, optics and modern physics.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three in-class exams and a final exam. Weekly problem sets. Average grade on problem sets may be substituted for one of the hour exams.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course is a continuation of PHYS 111, and will follow a similar format. While a background in calculus is not assumed, each student who enrolls in the course is assumed to be familiar with exponents and powers-of-10 ("scientific") notation, geometry, simple trigonometry, logarithms and proportions. Problem-solving help sessions, run by undergraduate TA's, are provided two evenings each week; additional help sessions may be organized for some afternoons if demand warrants. Students taking PHYS 112 are expected to enroll in a section of the associated laboratory lab PHYS122. Those who feel that they have cogent reasons for not taking the lab must submit a written request to the lab instructor, listing reasons for waiving the lab requirement, before they may preregister or enroll in the course. Students planning to enter the health professions should be aware that a year of physics WITH LABORATORY is usually required for admission. Consult your major advisor if you are in doubt about similar requirements in your field. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communictate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
