An Introduction to Ethical Theory

The course will explore foundational questions concerning
the nature and justification of Western morality through a
reading of works by Aristotle, Kant, and Mill. Issues
discussed will include the connection between morality and
human nature, the character of moral motivation, and the
possibility of a rational basis for moral obligation.
This course is more technically oriented than PHIL114. This
course is suitable for philosophy majors and others
interested in a more in-depth examination of ethical theory
within the Western philosophical tradition.

assignments at a higher level of difficulty.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
