A course in the rhythmic repertoire of South India using a system of vocables corresponding to drum strokes. An accelerated approach to the repertoire; students will receive an introduction to the fundamentals of tala and rhythmic composition. Advanced students will study a variety of compositions in a number of talas.

MAJOR READINGS

Compositions and/or exercises are presented
orally in notation. Through practice, students master the
assignments from one lesson to another.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular practices of class work. Composition assignments based on classes.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Strict attendance is compulsory. Section 2 will be open to students who have studied at least one semester of Solkattu. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
