An introduction to selected musical traditions of China
and/or Japan as performed and transmitted both in East Asia
and abroad. Special attention to the relationship of music
to broader cultural and historical trends.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Ethnographic observation (with
on-campus music groups if available); term research paper
on an East Asian musical tradition; event, to be approved by
instructor; weekly listening video and reading assignments;
midterm and final essay examinations.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
