The students acquire a thorough grounding in Euro-American
notation including reading movable clefs, notating
moderately advanced rhythmic constructions, and writing a
clear and efficient manuscript. They learn to transcribe
one- and two-voice textures from oral dictation, to describe
the scales and meters of the transcriptions, and to sing on
sight and reproduce by ear scales, melodies and rhythms from
many traditions. They also learn the conventional systems
for naming and classifying intervals, chords and meters, and
the basic vocabulary of music-theoretic discourse.
