This course is designed to familiarize students with the spectroscopic techniques currently used to study the molecules that make up the living cell. The first part of the course will cover optical spectroscopy of proteins and nucleic acids. Among the optical techniques to be discussed are absorption, linear and circular dichroism, fluorescence, Fourier-transform Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The second part of the course will present the basic concepts and principles of nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Selected applications of optical and magnetic resonance spectroscopic methods in molecular biology and biochemistry will be presented.
