A consideration of the relationship of microorganisms to diseases, including "social diseases." The structures and life cycles of bacteria and viruses will be examined. Particular regard will be paid to the possible role of viruses in the causation of cancer. Immunological phenomena --how the body resists attack from "foreign" organisms-- will be discussed, as well as the use of microorganisms in the study of basic biological problems. These include genetic engineering and regulation of cellular metabolism.
