An alternative to Math 221, this course will cover vector spaces, inner-product spaces, dimension theory, linear transformations and matrices, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, Hermitian and unitary transformations, and elementary spectral theory. Applications to analytic geometry, quadratic forms, and differential equations as time permits. The approach here is more abstract than that in Math 221, though many topics appear in both.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly homework assignments, midterm and final exams.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Math 223, Linear Algebra, is a deeper, more conceptual and somewhat more extensive study of linear algebra, offered as an altermative to Math 221, Vectors and Matrices. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
