This is a continuation of Math119. The course will be a blend of discrete and continuous mathematics illustrating how some of the deep ideas of Calculus (the continous) might arise from rather simple, natural, problems concerning (whole) numbers, their representation and their applications in algebra and geometry (the discrete). The emphasis is on connections, on how elementary problems evolve into avenues of significant discovery. There will be emphasis on writing. Due attention will be paid to the historical significance of the ideas.

MAJOR READINGS

Notes will be provided.
Readings from the literature will be assigned.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly problem sets. One paper will be assigned in addition to the readings. Midterm and final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
