Readings from THE ODES, employing a variety of critical
approaches to Horatian Lyric. Discussion of lyric poetry as
a genre and examination of comparable classical and
post-classical texts. Close reading of selected poems and
of secondary literature with special attention to critical
methodologies.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A sequence of three short
papers, as exercises in practical criticism and a longer
final paper; occasional in-class reports; reading
assignments (in Latin) each week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students should
normally have taken at least one Latin course at the 200-
level or the equivalent. In doubtful cases, consult
instructor.
