The development of Italian theater from the Renaissance to the present. Topics will include: the COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE tradition; Goldoni's reform of the Italian theater; the political role of opera in the Risorgimento; the crisis of bourgeois realism in Pirandello. Readings include Machiavelli, Goldini, Alfieri, Verdi, Pirandello and Dario Fo.
