The Novella ITAL232 FA

This course will trace the development of the novella, or short story, from its origins in the thirteenth century through the modern period. Although the emphasis will be on recurrent themes (love, marriage, the roles of women, priests), we will give some attention to stylistic development and to the social and historical contexts that affected individual writers.

MAJOR READINGS

Novelle by such writers as Petrus Alphonsus,
Francesco da Barberino, Iacopo Passavanti, Giovanni
Boccaccio, Lorenze de Medici, Niccolo Macchiavelli, Matteo
Bandello, Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Matilde Serao,
Grazia Deledda, Cesare Pavese, Alberto Moravia, Leonardo
Sciascia and contemporary authors.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Five short papers and one longer final one, one hour exam; oral presentations.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
